Our Story
Our Connection with the Ethiopian Community
The African Youth Collective was founded with strong ties to Melbourne's Ethiopian community — one of the largest and most vibrant African communities in Australia. From our earliest programs, Ethiopian young people, families, and community leaders have been at the heart of what we do.
This relationship goes beyond participation. Ethiopian community members have shaped AYC's programs, values, and direction. Their voices, experiences, and cultural knowledge are woven into everything we build together.
Through shared events, cultural celebrations, sport, food, and the B-MAD prevention framework, AYC and the Ethiopian community continue to grow a partnership built on trust, respect, and a shared commitment to the wellbeing of young people.

Our partnership with the Ethiopian community spans every dimension of AYC's work — from sport and recreation to mental health, cultural identity, and community leadership.
Cultural Celebration
We mark Ethiopian cultural events and traditions together — creating moments of pride, joy, and intergenerational connection for young people and families.
Sport & Recreation
Ethiopian youth are active participants in AYC's soccer, basketball, and recreation programs — building fitness, friendships, and community on the field and court.
Food & Gathering
Ethiopian cuisine is a proud part of our Sunday BBQ gatherings. Sharing food is one of the most powerful ways we celebrate identity and welcome one another.
Mental Health & Prevention
Through the B-MAD framework, we work alongside Ethiopian community leaders and families to support the mental health and resilience of young people.
Community Leadership
Ethiopian community members are leaders within AYC — contributing their knowledge, networks, and lived experience to shape programs that truly serve the community.
Youth Empowerment
We create pathways for Ethiopian young people to step into leadership, volunteer, and become active contributors to their community and to Australian society.

Celebrating Who We Are
Ethiopian culture is rich, vibrant, and deeply communal. At AYC, we honour that heritage — from Enkutatash (Ethiopian New Year) celebrations to traditional food, music, and storytelling that keep identity alive for young people growing up in Melbourne.
When young people see their culture reflected and celebrated, they feel seen. That sense of belonging is at the heart of everything we do.
