At African Youth Collective, we believe that a shared meal is more than just food — it is an opportunity to bring people together, build relationships, and strengthen our community.

About the Program

What is Foods for Thought?

What is Foods for Thought?

Foods for Thought is a community food program run by African Youth Collective that brings African youth, families, and community members together through shared meals, cultural connection, and open conversation. It is a free, welcoming space where no one has to face life's challenges alone — or on an empty stomach.

Why We Run It

Food is one of the most powerful tools for building trust, reducing isolation, and celebrating culture. Many young people in Melbourne's west experience social disconnection, food insecurity, and limited access to culturally safe support. Foods for Thought addresses all three — creating a regular gathering point where people feel seen, valued, and nourished.

Who Funds It

This program is made possible through the generous support of two local community businesses: Ahadu Ethiopian Restaurant in Sunshine and Kaldi's Cafe & Bar in Footscray. Ahadu donates freshly prepared Ethiopian meals every fortnight, and Kaldi's provides quality meat and Ethiopian foods at every Foods for Thought program. Without their commitment, this program would not exist.

What Happens at Foods for Thought?

Every Wednesday, AYC brings the community together for a free shared meal alongside conversations about wellbeing, culture, and connection. It is a space where people can access support, find belonging, and simply enjoy good food with good people.

Every Wednesday, participants can enjoy:

Freshly prepared community meals
A safe and welcoming environment
Positive conversations about mental health and wellbeing
Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) education and support
Youth mentoring and leadership opportunities
Cultural connection and community belonging
Access to community services and referral pathways

Our goal is simple: no one should have to face life's challenges alone or on an empty stomach.

Community gathering at Foods for Thought

A Partnership Built on Community

We are proud to announce that our Foods for Thought program is supported by Ahadu Ethiopian Restaurant (Sunshine) and Kaldi's Cafe & Bar (Footscray), who together provide fresh, quality meals for our Wednesday community gatherings.

Through this partnership, both Ahadu Ethiopian Restaurant and Kaldi's Cafe & Bar are helping us create a welcoming environment where young people, families, and community members can connect, enjoy nutritious food, and access support in a safe and culturally inclusive space.

"Together, we are creating a community where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and supported — one meal, one conversation, and one connection at a time."
